Before I get into my experience at RV, I want to share a little bit about me. I am Riya and I was born and raised in Northern Virginia. Virginia is most recognized for being near the capital of the US, but if any of you have the chance to visit, I promise there is way more to Virginia than just Washington D.C.

In October 2018, my mom came to me with what she said would be a “fun” summer internship. Off the bat I knew that had to be a lie because internship and fun are never used in the same sent...

When I came across the RiVAA summer internship program I was excited at the opportunity for my daughter. This summer it turned out to be everything that I wanted her to experience.

For me it was great to be in RV again, and it brought back so many memories of my time in school. The music assemblies, the arts and crafts, the folk dance, the hikes, the sunsets and the long walks. As most old students feel, the many things we took for granted as students, seemed so much more precious now .The calm...

On November 29th, 2018, Rishi Valley Institute for Educational Resources (RiVER) received the Silver Award for “Arts and Humanities" category at the Reimagine Education conference in San Francisco California. This conference was a 3-day event of educators and entrepreneurs from across the globe to share innovative school models, research methods and cutting-edge edtech products. It was truly an honor for RiVER to be recognized amidst these transformative practices in education. RiVER stood apart...

I arrived in Rishi Valley on June 27, 2018 for 3.5 weeks with a fairly simple goal - to do some filming of the school, make a video about it and hopefully make some friends along the way. But, I got so much more out of my stay. Here are my thoughts and reflections, some of which have been shared with the folks at Rishi Valley.

For those of you who don’t know me my name is Nakul, and I live in the bay area, California, where we have redwood trees, beaches and hippies. If you haven’t already met me...

Thirty years ago, I never imagined I would go back to Rishi Valley School with my son. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to share the place that influenced my life with my 15 year old this summer.

“Amma, you’re so lucky to have studied here. This is a special place.” This statement by Nakul, my 15 year old, made this endeavor worthwhile. What was this endeavor, you ask? What started as an idea during the Alumni meet in November 2017 became a reality in July 2018. An initiative started by...

The San Francisco Bay Area meet-up on May 6th attracted upwards of 55 people spanning years ranging from 1980 to 2011.

Siddhartha (sir) was very happy to meet everyone in person and the lively discussions on a broad set of topics. For those of you who were unable to attend, we enjoyed a relaxed afternoon of food and drink - a short presentation on RiVAA's mission and vision, RV summer internship program overview, followed by Siddharth (sir)  talking about RV. There were few gasps when he spoke ab...

The REC runs a number of satellite schools, primary schools following the Multi Grade Multi Level (MGML) methodology developed by RIVER - Rishi Valley Institute for Educational Resources.  These schools cater to children in rural hamlets inhabited primarily by subsistence farmers and herders.

The proposal is to use my run at the Boston Marathon as an occasion to pledge funds to create basic playground facilities in six satellite schools (including swings, seesaws, jungle gyms etc) at an estimated...

The health and wellbeing of Rishi Valley students has always held great importance. The hospital at Rishi Valley served the school well and the presence of the resident doctor and nurse was a source of great comfort to all. Unfortunately, with the coming of the monsoons in November 2015, the structure sustained irreversible damage and had to be replaced.

ISC 1988 came together as a group and worked with RVS to determine the scope and timeline of this project. Funding for the construction was rais...

After morning assembly and tea/ lime juice break, a group of us walked down the path behind the audi to head towards the Rural Education Center (REC). We were alumni from multiple batches who were being led by Rajesh and Kumaraswamy Sir to visit this magical place for children from the surrounding villages of Rishi Valley.

We walked towards the newest building, a preschool classroom, designed by Maya Herzberger (ISC 1988) and generously donated by University of Regensburg in Germany, which had a...
